Chelmer were approached by a prestigious developer who were looking for an integrated heating, cooling and hot water solution for one of their projects in Virginia Water, Surrey.
In spite of the presence of mains gas on site, the size of the project necessitated the use of low-carbon technology in order to get through the planning permission process.
Chelmer were commissioned to design and supply the underfloor heating, ground source heat pumps, hot water and buffer cylinders and other plant room controls, including an interface to provide the cooling system with passive or active cooling from the ground loops and heat pumps.
Because of the size of the system, it was comprised of separate hot water, heating and cooling cylinders, with a bespoke PLC based plant control panel to control the various inputs, outputs and priorites on the system.
Passive cooling was provided by pumping cool water from the ground loops through a heat exchange coil in the cooling buffer cylinder whilst active cooling functionaity was provided by reversing the heat pumps to provide large amounts of chilled water when required by the cooling system.
New Eco Self-Build Home, East Sussex

Project Type | Three Bedroom Detached |
Area | 200m2 |
System Type | Ecocat 400 Thermal Store |
Heat Sources |
|
Heating System | Underfloor Heating |
System Options | Stove Connection Kit |
Mr and Mrs H from East Sussex chose Chelmer to provide an integrated heating solution for their Code 4 sustainable home.
In order to meet the stringent levels outlined in the Code for Sustainable Homes, several aspects of the house, including the heating system, had to be markedly more efficient than a standard new build home. The H's also wished to make use of renewable and low carbon heat sources in order to reduce fuel bills in the long term.
Chelmer designed and supplied a heating and hot water system to suit these requirements by integrating solar thermal collectors and a wood burning stove into the system, with an air source heat pump acting as a backup heat source. Our Ecocat 400 thermal store cylinder was seleced for the project as it allowed the relatively simple integration of all three heat sources into a single system.
In addition to desinging and supplying the thermal store system and heat sources, we also provided fully zoned underfloor heating system for the project, which was specifically designed to operate with the low temperatures required for the heat pump to work efficiently.
Eco Renovation, Bedfordshire

Project Type | Five Bedroom Detached |
Area | 380m2 |
System Type | Ecocat 500 Thermal Store |
Heat Sources |
|
Heating System | Three Radiator Circuits |
System Options |
|
Dr R from Bedfordshire commissioned Chelmer to update his existing oil boiler system with a wood pellet boiler and Ecocat thermal store in order to improve his hot water performance and reduce his fuel bills.
An Ecocat 500 thermal store cylinder was selected to provide the large volumes of mains pressure hot water required as well as act as a heating buffer to minimise on/off cycling of the wood pellet boiler under low heat loads.
The wood pellet boiler and five tonne pellet hopper were housed in one of the farmhouse's outbuildings, with underground ducted pipework connecting the boiler to the Ecocat in the main farmhouse.
New Build Development, Cheshire

Project Type | Two Five Bedroom Detached Houses |
Area | 280m2 |
System Type | Ecocat 400 Thermal Store |
Heat Sources |
|
Heating System | Underfloor Heating |
System Options |
|
A small developer chose Chelmer to design and supply heating hot water systems for their development of two five bedroom detached houses in Cheshire.
The houses are fitted with Eoccat thermal store cylinders which utilise energy from evacuated tube solar thermal collectors to provide heat for heating and hot water. The Ecocats are backed up by gas condensing boilers, which are bought on if the solar cannot cope with the current heating or hot water demand.
The Chelmer underfloor heating systems in the properties are fitted with a touchpad controller to allow quick and easy control over the various heating zones.
New Luxury Home, Surrey

Project Type | Six Bedroom Detached |
Area | 880m2 |
System Type | Dual Cylinder System |
Heat Sources |
|
Heating System | Underfloor Heating |
System Options |

After susessful competion of the first luxury home project (see above) Chelmer were commissioned by the same developer to design and supply the heating and hot waer system for another luxury home on the prestigious Viginia Water estate.
Again, owing to the size fo the property, the system was comprised of separate hot water, heating and cooling cylinders, with a bespoke PLC based plant control panel to control the various inputs, outputs and priorites on the system.
