Case Study Corner

Sutton Manor

Chelmer have now started looking back on past jobs to see how things went.
Our Marketing Coordinator Chris Laing explains; “ Over the ten years Chelmer have been involved with an unbelievable range of UFH and renewable energy projects. It’s about time we started to show people exactly what we do as a company!” We sent out questionnaires to our local customers so they can tell us about their property in their own words. We will be featuring a different case study in every Chelmer Update.

Have you used Chelmer in your project? If so, we would like to know how it went! Download and fill in the case study form then email it along with some high quality photos of your project to c.robinson@chelmerheating.co.uk

Sutton Manor

Sutton Manor's Air Source Heat Pumps

Since September 2007, Chelmer have been working in conjunction with Exterior Plas Ltd on an exciting new project in Stapleford Tawney, Essex.

Sutton Manor is a beautiful listed building dating from 1540 which until recently, was an NHS drug/alcohol rehabilitation clinic until sold by Essex County Council. Exterior Plas took on the property for redevelopment into 8 apartments in the main building. Chelmer were asked to design a state of the art UFH and hot water system with a particular emphasis on renewable energy.

As the building is listed it presented a series of technical challenges to overcome. In a building of this age, having the correct level of insulation was absolutely critical, particularly as the main energy source is a bank of 6 x 17kW air source heat pumps. The heat pumps are backed up by a bank of 2 electric flow boilers which are programmed to supplement the heat pumps when the ambient temperature outside falls below 5°c

About the property
We have a new build bungalow with four bedrooms. The bungalow is 2500 square feet; we have a lounge, separate dining room, kitchen, utility room, four bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. All four bedrooms have wood flooring and the rest of the house is tiles. There are 5 of us living in the house, 2 adults, and 3 children. We have two fires in the house, on open fire and one wood burner. We intend on doing a loft conversion within the next two years which we have already made provisions for; we have the attic trusses, electric and water already taken up into the roof. We completed the build in March 2007 and moved in that Easter.

About the installation
The system was installed by Paul Flack. The installation process was good and we had no problems. All the pipework went down well and it was pressure tested for leaks. The system was left under pressure while the floors were screeded. Our electrician did all the wiring for the stats which went very well. Your technical support was a great help to him as it was his first underfloor heating job. The information manual was very well done and easy to understand. We were amazed how simple the whole process was and how quick it was up and running.

The System and its Operation
We have stats in all our rooms which are fantastic for room control. They are very easy to use and look good as well. We set the times for very early morning and when we wake up everywhere is warm. It’s amazing that it’s not just the floor that is warm, it heats the whole room and the air just feels comfortable and warm. Even after the heating has gone off everywhere stays warm for a long time and there is nothing better than having bare feet on a lovely warm floor. It’s wonderful to not have radiators on walls which would restrict furniture placement in each room. We also find our oil usage is good as well so we are pleased with the energy efficiency. There is no best thing about our heating, it’s all great!!
